We are thrilled to announce that Tamara Toles O’Laughlin JD/MELP’09 has been chosen to receive the Social Justice Scholars Alumni Award. The award, sponsored by the Social Justice Mission Scholars at Vermont Law School, was created to honor a Vermont Law School alumnus/a who has demonstrated a deep and abiding commitment to causes of social justice. Tamara has demonstrated that commitment—and then some!

In her role as the executive director of the Maryland Environmental Health Network (MdEHN), Tamara provides a platform to address environmental policies and practices as they relate to human health. Her efforts work to eliminate human exposure to environmental threats, and to build partnerships that bring together community members, health advocates, and experts in order to catalyze system level change.

Additionally, Tamara uses her spare time in the promotion of a just society, serving as co-chair of DC EcoWomen, a nonprofit organization that inspires and empowers women to become leaders in the environmental community through educational and professional development opportunities.

Tamara has also worked with the District Department of Energy and Environment in Washington, D.C, the Maryland Energy Administration, the Advisory Council of Historic Preservation, the Center for Race, Poverty, and Environment, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the New York Environmental Protection Agency.

Tamara’s commitment to social justice, her involvement in efforts to improve environments for underserved communities, and her demonstrated leadership in the social justice movement make her the ideal recipient of this award.
