The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the United States, today announced $1,000,000 in grants to support 41 summer programs as part of the $3 million Baltimore Summer Funding Collaborative. The initiative was created to fund high-quality summer programs that serve low-income Baltimore City youth.

The Summer Funding Collaborative—in addition to the Weinberg Foundation—includes the Abell Foundation, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Clayton Baker Trust, Family League of Baltimore, France-Merrick Foundation, Joseph & Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds, Lockhart Vaughan Foundation, The Morton K. and Jane Blaustein Foundation, and Under Armour.

Despite individual missions and priorities that include literacy; science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); youth employment; environmental education; sports; and the arts, all 11 members of the Collaborative share the same goal: to reduce summer learning loss and ensure more youth have the chance to reach their full potential during the summer and beyond.

"Research shows us that youth in low-income families, unlike their peers from higher-income families, often lack access to activities that keep their minds engaged over the summer," said Donn Weinberg, Weinberg Foundation Trustee and Executive Vice President. "This funding is a tangible investment in improved academic and life outcomes for thousands of young people in Baltimore City."

The following organizations will be funded specifically by the Weinberg Foundation:

  • Access Art
  • Afya Baltimore
  • Art with a Heart
  • Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School
  • The Baltimore Youth Alliance
  • The Be. Org
  • Beat the Streets – Baltimore

While each funder made its own internal funding decisions, all 11 funders shared the same application process and review strategy. The shared application has made it easier for organizations to apply for funding from multiple organizations while also facilitating more efficient and impactful funding decisions. Similarly, by using an objective scoring tool and common evaluation, the funders have a uniform framework to assess program quality and alignment with funding priorities.

This is the fourth year of summer youth-funding provided by the Weinberg Foundation, the third year as part of the Collaborative. Last summer, the Weinberg Foundation approved $770,000 in funding to 29 organizations. In 2016, the Summer Funding Collaborative, as a whole, served approximately 12,000 students. Several of the programs, which the Foundation supported in previous years as part of the Summer Funding Collaborative, are now supported through the Foundation's regular grantmaking process.
