Maryland has won $50 million to boost early childhood education programs in a high-profile competition intended to jump-start improvements in often-overlooked early childhood programs, state officials said.
The state, which has already invested heavily in early childhood education, is one of nine states that will share $500 million. The winners were announced Friday morning at the White House are California, Delaware, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington.
Five of the states, including Maryland, were winners in the Race to the Top competition two years ago. The state won $250 million in that competition to carry out a series of reforms that were intended to make schools more effective.
