ABAG Member, Associated Black Charities (ABC) President and CEO Diane Bell-McKoy responded to the recent U.S. Department of Justice report on Investigation of the Baltimore City Police Department.
If you are African American of any income level and live in the City of Baltimore, the report was not news. It was simply external confirmation of one’s lived experiences in Baltimore. And as an African American describing this truth to non-African Americans who have no experience with the police like this, you may even feel vindicated or relieved that someone else has confirmed your reality.
If you are an African American citizen living within the two communities cited within the report that are predominately poor and predominately African American and 44% of the unlawful and unconstitutional acts occurred, your anger may be at a boiling point as you listen to your stories come alive in print.
If you are Tyrone West’s mother, you may still be asking about justice for the death of your son. If you are the mother, father, sister, brother, grandparent of so many African Americans in Baltimore who have died a questionable death in connection to the police, your grief may be freshly felt once again.
