We are now over two years removed from the death of Freddie Gray and the uprising that followed. In that time, countless conversations and outreach to the West Baltimore neighborhoods most affected by that event (including Sandtown Winchester, Penn North, Upton and Druid Heights) have taken place, in an effort to better understand and improve the lives of the people who live, work, and study in those neighborhoods.

The University of Maryland School of Social Work has been working on the ground in those communities for many years and brings deep experience and relationships daily to West Baltimore residents and community-based organizations. Dean Richard Barth and his senior staff are eager to share the School's knowledge of how the response has evolved. Programs such as Promise Heights, B’More for Healthy Babies, the Positive Schools Center and Community Schools will be discussed. Considerable time will be taken to consider what else is needed as we head into the third summer after Freddie Gray died.

Our speakers will be:

  • Richard Barth, Dean, University of Maryland School of Social Work
  • Bronwyn Mayden, Director of Promise Heights
  • Stacey Stephens, Director of B’More for Healthy Babies in Promise Heights and Sandtown
  • Wendy Shaia, Director of Social Work Community Outreach Service (SWCOS) and the Positive Schools Center.

This program is sponsored by Kimberly Warren and John Cammack of the Cammack Family Charitable Gift Fund and Meg Woodside of the Woodside Foundation and is for ABAG members and invited guests only. Lunch will be served.
