In January 2003, a number of ABAG members began accepting a "common grant" application format. The format was developed by a working group of ABAG members representing various funders—large and small, corporate, family, and private. Trends in grant practice and web-based applications, led ABAG to discontinue the Common Grant and Reporting Formats in 2014. A few foundations continue to recommend the application format developed in 2003.

IF YOU WERE DIRECTED HERE BY A FOUNDATION YOU SHOULD USE THE 2003 "COMMON GRANT" APPLICATION AND REPORT DOCUMENTS ABOVE.

New resources on grant writing were developed by a Grant Format Revision Task Force (2013-2014) comprised of ABAG members, AFP-Maryland, Maryland Nonprofits, and nonprofit professionals. Additionally, ABAG conducted interviews with grantmakers and with small-staffed nonprofit organizations.

The primary purpose of the new material is to provide free education on how to write a high-quality proposal. ABAG works with its members to develop their grant process with this format as a model, and ABAG aims to phase out the 2003 format over time.
